This is one of the conclusions reached by the APEC economies during the second day of sessions of the CEO Seminar on âDisaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Preparedness and Responseâ being held in Lima.
Each of the economies loses thousands of dollars every time a disaster occurs in the region; however, this loss can be avoided if coordination mechanisms were created in association with the private sector and if APEC economiesâ technical capacities were identified- particularly those related to technology, training, and material and human resources management.
Other inputs made to the strategy were the promotion of mutual assistance in responding an emergency, as well as the promotion of policies based on successful experiences of the member economies.
According to the consulting team in charge of the project, the second day of the CEO seminar was a long but certainly satisfactory working journey since the inputs made by the economies were highly valuable and will give added-value to the strategy when incorporated.
With the presence of over 100 delegates coming from the APEC economies, the CEO Seminar for Disaster Preparedness and Response started yesterday August 12 in Lima- Peru. Some member economies participated offering very important lectures, which helped better outline the main topic and find common points on interests for the discussion on the strategy proposal submitted by Peru. âThis proposal seeks the strengthening of the regionâs Response capacity through information-sharing, more use of technologies and response systematization in events of emergenciesâ- pointed out Major General Luis Palomino, Head of the National Institute of Civil Defense.
